Whilst Bella and Edward were heavily criticised respectively for being ‘emotionless’ and ‘too perfect’ in the earlier Twilight Saga novels, Midnight Sun paints these protagonists with such great depth that you can’t help but feel cheated by Twilight. There is no glossing over of character growth and personality here, and Meyer’s writing is technically more captivating. There is a notable lack of elementary or ‘crude’ dialogue, an issue which plagued Twilight.

However, looking at the positives (of which there are many), Midnight Sun evidences Meyer’s progress and improvement as a writer.

Twelve year old me would be screaming RN.Īdditionally, as an insight into Edward’s mind, this novel is filled with some of his darkest thoughts which (SPOILER ALERT) actually vividly illustrate his desire to kill Bella and drain her of her blood. It is not a new story, and still consists of all the ‘cringey’ aspects Twilight is infamous for from sparkly vampires to teenage boys who transform into giant wolves. This novel is most definitely written for those who fell in love with the Twilight saga and who were eagerly awaiting another instalment. But this is not to say that this novel is without flaws. Meyer’s words captured my attention from the get-go, and I was soon pulled back into the dreary and overcast town of Forks, where Edward Cullen and Bella Swan’s love story began. I am now a university-educated young adult with arguably more sophisticated tastes in pop culture. I will admit, in the lead up to the release, I worried that the magic of the Twilight love story between 104-year-old vampire Edward and 17-year-old Bella would no longer enthral me as it once did, and that I would see through the façade of what was, objectively speaking, a highly toxic and dangerous relationship. However, I was no longer a naïve pre-teen.

Stephenie Meyer officially announced the release of Midnight Sun! Of course, I immediately pre-ordered it. After waiting for such a long time, my expectations were high. Yet, on May 4th 2020, my teenage dreams came true. Midnight Sun was to be a re-telling of the first novel in the Twilight saga from Edward Cullen’s perspective. I was absolutely SHATTERED when Stephenie Meyer originally abandoned Midnight Sun after parts of the draft copy were leaked online. This still makes me swoon 12 years later…
